HIV prevalence and related factors: Higher Education Sector Study, South Africa, 2008–2009 

Results from the higher education survey undertaken by the Higher Education HIV and AIDS Programme (HEAIDS). The research featured an HIV prevalence study and knowledge, attitude, behaviour and practice (KABP) survey, administered to more than 23,000 staff and students at 21 higher education institutions in South Africa. In addition, CADRE was responsible for a qualitative sub-study involving 600 students and staff in 67 focus groups and 60 interviews.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) and HIV are linked in a two-way relationship where each can be, and often is, a causal factor for the other. Children who have been orphaned or who are otherwise especially vulnerable seem to be at particular risk in relation to both being sexually abused and infected with HIV. The HIV epidemic increases children's vulnerability through the illness and premature death of parents from HIV-related illnesses and subsequent shifts in children's care as a result of parental care falling away. This research explored how particular contexts and care settings impact the susceptibility of orphans and other vulnerable children (OVCs) in South Africa to child sexual abuse.5th South African AIDS Conference, Durban, June 2011 [poster]

Making sense of HIV/AIDS in South Africa: Issues of Prevention. Seminar at the Centre of African Studies, Copenhagen, Denmark

Qualitative research was conducted in the rural Eastern Cape and peri-urban Western Cape, investigating social contexts of risk for child sexual abuse through the perspectives of community inhabitants and local service providers. Community case studies revealed a diversity of ways in which children are at risk of being sexually abused. Child sexual abuse is underpinned by social norms and traditional practices, lack of service provision, and situations of severe economic dependency. 5th South African AIDS Conference, Durban, June 2011 [poster]
