Community entry points: Opportunities and strategies for engaging community supported HIV/AIDS prevention responses

This study expanded on CADRE’s previous research into the effects of large scale funding on local-level systems for the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and malaria. This study examines lessons learned from strengthening the prevention response in community settings and the challenges of, and efficiencies gained through a community-based model of service delivery. It also looks at how communities develop indigenous prevention messages and methods and provides suggestions on how to increase effective service delivery of HIV prevention through promoting access to and absorption of funds by community organisations.

'Portrait of an African community responding to AIDS' tells the story of a remarkable community organisation in Tanzania, the Faraja Trust Fund. Anyone interested in how communities respond to the challenges brought about by HIV and AIDS will find this report of interest. The report reflects on the relatively undocumented role of civil society organisations and their success. The story is also about the efforts of external funders to assist in alleviating problems that are deeply embedded at the community level. The study, commissioned by the Ford Foundation’s East Africa office, raises questions about what constitutes viable and sustainable community HIV/AIDS responses and how these can be best supported.
